🤫 Show, Don't Tell #82 - Font size matters

Read Time: 3.6 minutes

Welcome to our 82nd edition of Show, Don't Tell. A newsletter to help you build REMARKABLE interactive demos...3 tips at a time.

This week we:

  1. read a welcome step that tells you exactly how long the job takes
  2. slide from a homepage into a demo without feeling the change
  3. update the theme setting nobody thinks to touch

Let's get after it...

Supported By:

  • Navattic is our favorite interactive demo platform ❤️
  • It's easy to build demos of your product, that feel like the real thing
• With HTML screen captures, easy editing, lots of sharing options, and powerful analytics

Tip #1: Share the Value On Your Welcome Step

Step 1 is an important piece of real estate. It can make or break how the rest of the demo goes.

Because buyers shouldn’t reach step 4 and still wonder what your product does for them, right?

Proposify kicked off their demo with: “Crank out proposals in minutes.” Then right underneath it:

They allow sellers to send on-brand, error-free documents at scale. The average time to create a proposal in Proposify is 17 minutes.

Seventeen minutes is a number you can picture. “Faster proposals” isn't.

Jason and I like this because the whole promise of the product is speed, and they proved it before asking for a single click. You know what you're about to watch AND why you'd care.

One nitpick: the button just says “Next.” Something like “Start tour” would probably pull a little harder. But we're splitting hairs on a good screen.

Tip #2: Glide Them In, Don't Ship Them Out

Website demos are great, but they can be tricky. No one wants to click “see it in action” and find a second or two where the page swaps, or some clumsy UX.

Provet takes “seamless” to a new level..

You're on their homepage, you go into the demo, and the transition just… carries you. No hard cuts of any kind. Jason's exact words were: “I don't know how they do it, but it's, like, really, really nice.”

Neither of us knows how they do it. We just know we watched it more than once.

These moments matter because that’s where people bail, and it's the moment a demo stops feeling like a cool addition to the website.

→ Take the ride from Provet's homepage into their demo

Tip #3 - If It's Short, Make It Huge

Pretend you're taking a demo on your phone. The tooltip pops up with maybe eight words in it, and those eight words are sitting in the middle of a big empty box. To make matters worse, it’s set in the same tiny type your legal team uses for the privacy policy.

Are you squinting? (I was.)

That’s why we appreciate Tapcheck. They went BIG.

Click “Take a Tour” on their employers page and tell me what you notice. They went into the theme and blew the font size way… way up.

It’s a great example because:

  • the room is already there, so use it
  • big type survives the phone, and a lot of your demo traffic is from mobile

If your steps run two sentences or less, there's no reason for that copy to be small.

Everything you need to know about capturing and editing screens in Navattic 👇

Screen captures are the building blocks of your interactive demo. You simply can't have a demo without them!

So we created a 101-level intro on how to create/edit them in Navattic.

If you're new to Navattic or still feel like you've barely scratched the surface with screen capturing and editing, this is a video you won't want to miss.

PLUS, you'll get a sneak peek of their new In-line and Copilot editor, which brings Navattic's capture editing, and new AI editing capabilities, directly into the demo builder.
